Volunteering at Sunshine House

Volunteers at Sunshine House – The working angels…

Since the birth of the Sunshine House community, volunteers have been playing a vital role for the smooth flow of our daily activities. People from all over the world, of all ages and backgrounds, have stayed here for long or just for a while and they all added a piece to the multiethnic net that surrounds our community. You will find them working in the kitchen, watering the garden, hanging clothes, exchanging massage, singing and dancing, adding so much color and karma yoga spirit in Sunshine House.

What does it mean to volunteer at Sunshine House?

Working and Eating together at Sunshine HouseWe offer a full day’s food and accommodation in return for half a day’s work (4-6 hours usually). The work is not glamorous and so we ask for people to come who will enjoy cleaning a toilet as much as harvesting potatoes. Tasks during course time are usually involved with helping things run smoothly – so house cleaning, kitchen prep, washing dishes, laundry, pet care and garden maintenance. Work in between courses depends on the season and the projects we have going on at that time.

We enjoy the exchange that Karma Yogis bring into our house as there is always so much to learn and even more to be done, especially during the courses. The accommodation is most likely to be a tent in the Summer months and a shared room in the house in the Winter, depending on the number of people staying at that time.

We provide

  • Accommodation tent/room
  • Hot showers
  • Washing machine
  • Self-catered kitchen (when no courses)
  • Cooked meals (during courses)
  • Internet access (when available)
  • Yoga classes when scheduled (space provided)

We ask for

  • An open mind
  • Work to be done with love and positivity
  • Independence
  • Initiative (seeing what needs to be done without having to be spoon-fed)
  • Community spirit
  • Mindful consumption
  • And most importantly a desire to engage in DAILY SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

In our experience volunteering here is not for those who have a very short time in Greece and would like to see many things but are on a budget and use this way to do it. It is about resting in one place for a while, getting into the groove, offering something for the good of all and then feeling when it’s the best time to move on.

We try to use organic fruits, vegetables and herbs as much as possible and use them for either cooking or for medicinal purposes. We have ourselves orange, lemon, fig, eucalyptus, peach, plum, quince, apricot and almond trees and we try our best grow vegetables around the garden. We believe that all of our volunteers should talk to the plants as much as possible… we are all from the earth and need to feel her presence to gain enough vitality to continue our journey in this life.
